Finally, the new UFC Meta Rankings were unveiled last night, and they’re set to replace the previous media rankings from now on. But what exactly are the new UFC Meta Rankings?

UFC President Dana White explained a year ago how dissatisfied he was with the media rankings. That’s why he decided to launch an AI-based ranking system, and it’s here now.

A major sticking point was the fact that rankings were often based on media polls, and that is now set to change in favor of an official analysis of the fighters. The AI is designed to ignore past successes and focus solely on current performance, and it’s based on a specific principle: if you beat him, you rank ahead of him.

Champions will, of course, remain at the top. The focus is more on active fighters and inactive fighters, as they’ll be evaluated differently under the new system. This also explains why many big names won’t be listed at first. If a fighter’s last bout was two years ago, they’ll be rated significantly lower than they currently are.

My own opinion is also mixed. On the one hand, I’m glad there’s a standardized system; on the other hand, the activity-based principle could lead to confusing rankings for some. But I’m curious to see exactly what we can expect in the end, and to what extent it will actually be implemented.
