Benavidez loses WBA title as cruiserweight future takes shape

David Benavidez is no longer listed as the WBA regular light heavyweight world champion. This gives him one less reason to return to that division, and he should now focus more on the cruiserweight division.

He continues to hold his WBC light heavyweight title, which does not rule out a return to that division for the time being. However, this gives the impression that winning titles in the cruiserweight division has apparently become his priority. The change in titleholder follows a request from the WBA to David Benavidez to finally clarify his plans.

“The WBA Championship Committee has requested David Benavidez to clarify which title he intends to continue campaigning for”

they said.

Although he currently still holds the WBC light heavyweight title, he is expected to relinquish it soon. His priority right now is to unify the cruiserweight titles. This will give David Benavidez the opportunity to fight more at a higher weight class. A return to his former weight class isn’t out of the question, but it would mean he’d have to lose weight again and would have to put unification fights on hold for the time being. How long do you think he’ll hold onto the WBC title?

Personally, I think he’ll give it up in the next few days so as not to hold up the division. I’m curious to see what awaits us with two new titleholders. What do you think?
