Demetrious Johnson Breaks Down Gaethje vs. Topuria Fight!
Why Justin Gaethje’s “Stand-and-Trade” Style and Mid-Range Control Made the Difference in a Brutal Elite-Level Battle

Demetrious Johnson uploaded a video to YouTube in which he breaks down the fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, using his expertise to explain why Justin Gaethje ultimately won.
“Mighty” says that Justin Gaethje made a very conscious decision to go with the “stand-and-trade” style. This means focusing less on defense and more on engaging in direct exchanges of blows. Ilia Topuria , on the other hand, tended to work from close range; the problem was that he often stayed in the dangerous mid-range for too long, explained “Mighty.”
There, he praised Justin Gaethje , saying he had a wide variety of combinations and always used them perfectly whenever Ilia Topuria gave him an opening. Nevertheless, he also mentions that as long as Ilia Topuria kept the close range clean, he always had the fight well under control. But experience and willpower kept Justin Gaethje in the fight. Justin Gaethje then lands some very well-placed jabs and uppercuts, visibly increasing the damage.
“Once you see that grimace, you can tell that something’s broke.”
he said, adding that Ilia Topuria ’s overall damage output is much more evident.
The key factor for “Mighty” was ultimately the mid-range, which Justin Gaethje naturally exploited perfectly. Overall, however, he also says it was a very close fight, and there was no clear dominant fighter over extended periods. So, according to him, it was a close and hard-fought battle at the absolute top level.
Regarding Justin Gaethje , he added:
“There’s nothing that Justin Gaethje can do to top this in his career.”
He might not have expected it beforehand, but he had nothing but praise for Justin Gaethje ’s performance.
I always find it really interesting to watch an expert’s fight analysis again. He offers different perspectives and presents a clear framework. I highly recommend everyone watch the video again.
