Jaron Ennis and Josh Kelly eye super welterweight unification

The two champions are on a collision course as both chase more world titles

Jaron Ennis and Josh Kelly eye super welterweight unification

Jaron Ennis might have the chance to win three of the four super welterweight world titles in less than a year. But the road to that goal will be anything but easy, because Josh Kelly has the same goal in mind.

The newly crowned unified WBA and WBO world champion most recently defeated Xander Zayas, stopping him in the seventh round. It was a very strong performance on his part, but critics still point out that he was at times too careless on defense, which allowed Xander Zayas to get back into the fight at times.

Nevertheless, it must be clearly stated that Jaron Ennis was the superior fighter and dominated the fight for the most part. However, it’s also important to note that he needs to correct these minor mistakes as quickly as possible if he wants to become the undisputed world champion.

On the other hand, there’s Josh Kelly , who secured the world title earlier this year and recently defended it against Caoimhín Agyarko.

Following that defense, he has his sights set on Jaron Ennis and his two world championship belts.

Josh Kelly has proven time and again that he wants to test his skills against the world’s best boxers, and a fight against Jaron Ennis would be the perfect opportunity to do so.

The problem, however, is that Josh Kelly suffered a serious injury during his title defense, and most people assumed we'd have to wait a while longer for that mega-fight. However, his trainer, Adam Booth, has now stated that he's expected to be back in shape sooner than anticipated.

“Fortunately, because of the surgeon Neil Scott, he did a fantastic job. He used little stitches and a few of them to speed up the repair and healing process, Josh is going to be healed in eight weeks, which means that, certainly by the end of the year, he’ll be okay”

Booth told talkSPORT.

If both boxers really want to unify the titles, this is the only way to do it. The reason is that the current WBC world champion, Sebastian Fundora, first has to defend his title against Vergil Ortiz Jr. According to Josh Kelly’s trainer, however, the goal is clear: the titles are to be unified.

“Josh wants to unify, whether that’s ‘Boots’ or whether that’s Fundora. Now, I don’t think it can be Fundora this year because I think he’s doing his WBC mandatory”

Booth explained.

So the future of the world championship titles looks very interesting. It remains to be seen whether one of the boxers will actually be able to unify the titles.

For me, the fight between Jaron Ennis and Josh Kelly would be one of the most interesting fights in the super welterweight division. Jaron Ennis is currently the most well-rounded boxer in the division, but Josh Kelly has exactly the skills that could end up causing problems. I'm really curious to see if this matchup actually happens!
