John Kavanagh says a preventable training injury forced Conor McGregor to postpone his long-awaited UFC return.

McGregor coach takes blame for delayed comeback

Conor McGregor, as has been mentioned many times, will be making his return from a five-year hiatus this weekend, and he’ll be facing a tough opponent right off the bat: Max Holloway. But why did the comeback take five years?

There’s now a new statement on the matter, and it came from his trainer.

Actually, Conor McGregor was supposed to make his comeback against Michael Chandler two years ago. But a toe injury forced Conor McGregor to cancel the fight. And the trainer is taking the blame for that very injury.

”I’ll say it more bluntly than (McGregor) will, I should have had the protective gear on both guys from the start. The beginning of it was a little bit rushed. It’s different when you’re sparring for sparring, and sparring for whatever they were, Embedded or Countdown, and it was a bit sort of haphazard.

said his trainer, John Kavanagh.

That’s exactly where Conor McGregor got injured, likely due to a lack of protective gear. At first, the team didn’t even know how serious the injury was and continued sparring for the time being. Ultimately, the injury left Conor McGregor with no choice but to cancel the fight against Michael Chandler.

Ahead of his upcoming comeback, John Kavanagh didn’t want to take any risks at all this time.

“So we’ve been super careful this training camp. Not a niggle on him, not a bump, not a bruise, 100 percent, and we’ll get to see the best version of him.”

he said.

There are now only a few days left until Conor McGregor is set to return to the ring. Everyone is hoping it will work out this time. But his team is definitely avoiding any risks.

Personally, I can understand why some fans are still skeptical that Conor McGregor will actually step back into the ring this weekend, but just because it happened once doesn’t mean it will happen again. I definitely feel sorry for his trainer, because no one wants to be held responsible for something like that. However, maybe it’s a good thing it happened once, because as we know, experience is the best teacher.
