Prates questions Makhachev's title fight decision
The Brazilian criticizes the champion's preparation window and backs his own claim to a title shot.

Carlos Prates sharply criticized Islam Makhachev in an Instagram post. After the UFC announced the interim title fight at UFC 336, he accused the champion of simply trying to delay the title fight. He questioned how it could be that Islam Makhachev apparently won’t be ready to fight in three months, while at the same time announcing that he would win the interim title with a knockout against Michael Morales and then take on the champion. Carlos Prates sets himself apart from the other challengers by highlighting past victories over other contenders. At the same time, he questions the champion’s lifestyle. He said:
“Brother, you don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t go to parties and can’t prepare for a fight in three months?”
And we already know that he’s racked up some impressive wins in the past. However, the whole title situation does make things a little more exciting, since we’ll then really see the deserving fighter in the next title bout. It’s not about questioning the past or anything else, it’s simply about finding the right opponent.
I think Islam Makhachev’s decision was a good one, but of course I also understand Carlos Prates’ frustration. I simply believe that this is how the perfect contender is identified, and that’s exactly what we want to see. What do you guys think?
