Ryan Garcia questions Gervonta Davis’ comeback

Garcia questions Davis’ motivation and sees a path to victory in a rematch.

Ryan Garcia questions Gervonta Davis’ comeback

Ryan Garcia believes there’s more to Gervonta Davis’s absence than just his off-ring issues. He suspects that Gervonta Davis’s performance against Lamont Roach Jr. and his somewhat ambiguous relationship with the sport of boxing could make another comeback difficult.

Lamont Roach Jr. highlighted the danger lurking in Gervonta Davis’s fighting style. He often tends to give up points in the early rounds while he studies his opponent. Lamont Roach Jr., however, remained disciplined and kept his punch volume high, which only made it harder for Gervonta Davis to mount an offensive. Ryan Garcia has apparently found a way to make life difficult for him. The plan is to consistently win rounds with jabs and under no circumstances give him any opportunities for a knockout. Speaking to Club Shay Shay, he said:

“Got to be something mental. It takes a lot to be away from the sport a long time and then get back into it. That’s why I like to stay active, and that’s why I feel my best right now. He’s been out of the ring so long, and the last outing wasn’t that good. It could be playing on his mind a little bit, and he doesn’t seem like he really loves the sport. It’s much different when you love the sport, and you just love the money”

If there were to be a rematch between the two, it would take place in the welterweight division. That would give Ryan Garcia the advantage he needs to beat Gervonta Davis. He could bring more energy to the fight and keep the pace high throughout. However, the mistake from the last fight still remains. Gervonta Davis landed a liver hook on him, which forced him to throw in the towel. Ryan Garcia made a defensive mistake here that he could make again at a higher weight class. He needs to watch out for his left hook, since Gervonta Davis read it too well and then countered it. The fight against Lamont Roach Jr. definitely showed that Gervonta Davis is beatable; the only question is when he’ll come back and whether he’ll actually fight Ryan Garcia then.
