Schofield claims vacant WBA title after Bahdi win

Floyd Schofield secured the vacant WBA lightweight world title last night after defeating Lucas Bahdi by unanimous decision. This brings his record to 20-0, with 13 knockouts.

The bout was originally scheduled between him and Gervonta Davis. However, Gervonta Davis saw other fights as a better option and declined the match. It was supposed to be a mandatory title defense for Gervonta Davis, but after he turned down the fight, he was temporarily designated as champion in recess. As a result, the two got to fight for the vacant title last night.

Overall, though, the fight was quite competitive. Floyd Schofield got off to a better start and sent his opponent to the canvas in the third round. His opponent fought his way back, however, and gradually built up pressure with his punching power. In the end, though, the lead Floyd Schofield had built up in the early rounds was enough for him to win the bout. After the fight, however, he admitted to having underestimated Lucas Bahdi’s punching power.

“I didn’t expect him to have as much power as he did”

he said.

He also said that he briefly considered starting an open exchange of blows after Lucas Bahdi hit him hard once.

“I was kinda sleeping on his power so he caught me – once he caught me I wanted to get it back, but I thought to myself what was more important… showing I have an ego or going for the World Title”

he said.

While Gervonta Davis continues to look for a suitable opponent for his return, we now have a new world champion. What do you think, and do you think the victory was deserved?

I do think the better fighter won yesterday. But I believe that if Lucas Bahdi had applied pressure earlier on, like he did at the end, things could have gotten dangerous a few times; as it stands, though, the result is what we all know.
