Usyk's final decision?!

The Ukrainian champion gives up his belts, shaking up the heavyweight division while confirming his career is not over

Boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk is now officially relinquishing his three remaining world titles. This afternoon, he posted a video message to his fans on social media. In it, he announced that he wants to make his titles available again to other fighters who deserve them. This naturally raises the question: Will he leave the sport? And no, he won’t be ending his career just yet.

“I’m relinquishing my belts, but I’m not leaving boxing. There’s more to come."

said the Ukrainian. So that means Oleksandr Usyk will continue to fight in the future, though probably no longer for titles.

Since he is no longer defending his titles, the situation naturally changes for the other boxers as well. This is especially true for Agit Kabayel, who has already challenged Oleksandr Usyk to a fight several times. Despite Oleksandr Usyk's frequent cancellations, Agit Kabayel remains very respectful and immediately showed respect for Oleksandr Usyk on social media. However, there are now two options for Agit Kabayel. Either one or more organizations will declare him the top contender, because of the interim title he has, and immediately crown him world champion, or the title will be considered vacant, and Agit Kabayel will get a shot at the title(s). Possible opponents would then, of course, include Tyson Fury, who is considered the number one contender, but also Moses Itauma or Lawrence Okolie. It remains to be seen which path will ultimately be chosen. What is certain, however, is that the major world governing bodies must find a new titleholder.

We received some incredible news this afternoon. And I actually find it very interesting. We’ll be seeing new title fights again, and Oleksandr Usyk will remain in the sport. In my opinion, this is news that could really breathe new life into things. Personally, I’d also be very happy for Agit Kabayel, but I’d prefer the option of a title fight. It remains to be seen which option will ultimately be chosen, but I’m looking forward to it!
