Vergil Ortiz Jr. is running out of opponents

Ortiz needs a fight as the division moves on

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is now back in training and is aiming for his next fight in mid-November. After Jaron Ennis turned him down, finding an opponent was difficult at first. But now he seems to have found someone he might be interested in, and a matchup that, at first glance, doesn’t seem unrealistic. We’re talking about Jermall Charlo.

The problem is that Jermall Charlo has spoken up again and said:

“not true at all. I talked to [Premier Boxing Champions head] Al [Haymon] myself and I’m [fighting] Tim [Tszyu] next, working on location”

That means Jermall Charlo is also off the table for Vergil Ortiz Jr..

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is currently in a very difficult situation. Due to a legal dispute, he has missed several important months in the division, and with them, a potential fight against Jaron Ennis. While the other boxers in his division continue to develop, he can’t find any opponents or is focusing too much on the bigger names. However, none of them seem interested because a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr. doesn’t seem worthwhile enough. And the fact that Jermall Charlo has also pulled out is a real problem for him. His manager explained that they had already approached several opponents, but no one has responded.

"Boots: No, for five weeks now. Fundora: No, and never will as per Sampson L. in a public statement. Tim Tszyu: Told no for now, medical and other plans pending. WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara: Told no for now, has another fight pending. Xander Zayas: For sure a no. Spence: retired Keith Thurman: Looked too bad and retired basically. Charlo: Might be only one possible for a solid fight”

This seems to be turning into a real problem for Vergil Ortiz Jr..He needs a fight soon so he doesn’t let the entire division pass him by. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next with him, the main thing is that he gets back in the ring.

Personally, though, I don’t think the decisions he and his team are making are particularly smart. They can see what’s happening right now, the division is moving very quickly. So they’ll just have to have a comeback fight first before the bigger names are ready to fight again. I’m curious to see how they’ll handle this.
