Zuffa could crown its best middleweight

The middleweight division offers Zuffa Boxing a good opportunity to generate interest in the division and to find out just how good Aaron McKenna really is. The company promotes the IBF champion, but his title win against Etinosa Oliha hasn’t really proven to most people that he’s truly the best boxer in the division.

Zuffa could answer this question by briefly signing the WBC champion Carlos Adames and the WBO champion Denzel Bentley and having all three compete against each other in an elimination tournament.

Journalist Dashan Desai came up with this idea and also mentioned that Denzel Bentley and Carlos Adames are currently without contracts, so they would be available.

“If Zuffa Boxing wants to take over a division and make fights where it’s ‘Best vs. The Best,’ why not go for middleweight? They have IBF champion Aaron McKenna. WBO champion Denzel Bentley is a free agent. WBC champion Carlos Adames is a free agent”

Zuffa definitely has the money and the means, but does it make sense from a sporting perspective? Well, yes. The division would then have a clear dominant fighter, even if there are, of course, other dangerous contenders. Besides, it would also give Zuffa clarity on which boxer they should really continue to support. So if Zuffa really did sign both fighters, we might soon see a very unconventional method for determining the best fighter in the division. Of course, even after the tournament, it wouldn’t be completely settled, since Yoenli Hernandez alone remains a very dangerous contender. But at least there would be more clarity than there is now.
